B2B Book Review: Beyond Viral by Kevin Nalty

It’s that time again where we take a look at some of the books that have advice to offer for B2B marketers, salespeople, managing directors and more. There are so many books on the market that it can be difficult to choose, but we think Beyond Viral stands out purely because of its author.

Kevin Nalty has been labelled as “the only career marketer who doubles as one of YouTube’s most-viewed entertainers”. As well as his consultancy work with brands like GE, Fox, Panasonic, Coca Cola, MTV and Starbucks, Nalty is also known as “Nalts” on YouTube. He’s no longer as active as he used to be because he cut his teeth back when the site was brand new, but he still has an impressive total of over 300 million views and 235,000 subscribers.

That’s what makes this book so interesting. This isn’t just some boring self-proclaimed thought leader in a suit but rather someone with hands-on experience of going viral. After all, he has not one but two videos with over 40 million views. Most brands would struggle to get 40,000.

Beyond Viral

In Beyond Viral, Nalty shares the secrets and strategies that enabled him to create cost-effective videos while building a community. Sure, it’s harder for brands to build communities than it is for individuals, but it’s not impossible. Just take a look at BlendTec and the results they got from their Will It Blend? series.

The great thing about creating videos is that it makes it much, much easier for you to engage with people. This is particularly relevant for B2B companies, although it might not initially seem like it. But the truth is that if your leads and customers can see the people behind your business, it makes it more likely that they’ll make purchases in the future. People like to do business with the people they like.

Luckily, Nalty’s book is filled with practical advice on how to create great video and how to share it with your audience, and he focusses on the theory and the practical techniques that you’ll use as opposed to which cameras and which software you’ll need. That’s the kind of stuff that goes out of date straight away, and you can find it easily enough by Googling it.

More on Kevin Nalty

Kevin Nalty knows what he’s best at and so he hasn’t written any other books, which means you’ll be disappointed if you’re hoping for more. The good news is that he does do consultancy work from time to time and while he’s no longer actively creating videos, he’s still very much on top of video marketing best practices. He’s a useful guy to have around, especially if you’re looking to work with influencers or to score a viral success.
